Builders TPD & Trauma Insurance

Builders Insurance

Out of all the builders insurance policies available, TPD and trauma insurance are perhaps the most underutilised and misunderstood by most people in the building industry.

Although these covers may not seem as important to the average builder as public liability or insurance protection insurance, they certainly have their place in a comprehensive insurance package.

So what do TPD insurance and trauma insurance actually cover?

TPD Insurance

TPD stands for total and permanent disability insurance. The policy is designed to cover you if you suffer an injury or illness that leaves you unlikely to ever return to work.

If you were to suffer a serious injury or illness like this, your ability to earn an income will potentially be erased forever. Because of this, you need to make sure you have enough TPD insurance (combined with your income protection insurance) to see you through the rest of your life.

The policy will pay you a lump sum amount that is agreed to when you first take out the insurance. The funds can be used to repay your mortgage and other debts, cover lost income and pay for expensive treatment and rehabilitation. In some cases funds will also be used for home and vehicle modifications, for example if the injury left you in a wheelchair.

Because of the serious physical injury risk that builders are exposed to every day, TPD is an absolute must as part of any builders insurance package.

Trauma Insurance

Trauma insurance is similar to TPD insurance, but covers a different type of event. Whilst TPD covers you for injuries and illnesses that leave you permanently disabled, trauma insurance covers you for critical illnesses where you may (or may not) have a chance at recovery and the ability to return to work.

If you are diagnosed with a critical illness such as cancer, heart attack, stroke or any of the other specified illnesses, your trauma insurance policy will pay you a lump sum amount agreed to when you take out the policy.

The funds from your trauma insurance policy can be used to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses and rehabilitation costs that can easily stretch into six figures if you wish to access the best medical care available.

Whilst a builder's occupation doesn't make trauma insurance any more or less important, most people would agree that trauma insurance can be of huge benefit to a builder or anyone else.
